Scratch Repair

Seeing a scratch on your car after you have been out shopping is an all too common experience. You know it wasn’t there before. Someone must have either keyed it, caught it with a trolley or just doesn’t know how to park.

For scratches that are not too deep, i.e it hasn’t gone through the lacquer and paint, the chances are it can be polished out. A car scratch of this kind is very easy to deal with. The wet and dry method of reducing the scratch is used for slight scratches before a machine polishes it out.

For deeper scratches that managed to go through the lacquer and paint then the method used to repair the paintwork is similar to that used in stone chipping. The scratch is first built up by adding lacquer before it is flattened and polished.

Both of the methods mentioned do not result in an invisible repair. They do however significantly lessen the appearance of the scratch to the point where the damage is not very easily noticed.

If you want the repair to result in a flawless look the scratch has to be painted over. Repairs of this kind are possible for car wings or bumpers. However if the scratch is in the middle of a door or bonnet you might need a body shop to do the job if you want an invisible repair. SMART repairs are suitable for small to medium area repairs only.

Scratch removal costs around £20 per panel depending on the extent of the scratch.
